Re: Ron Zacapa 23 as a benchmark

Sorry, I'm just a bit annoyed by Beverage Testing Institute and some other self-proclaimed de facto authorities that people so often refer to, be they individuals or "institutes". Too often one can see commercial connections affecting the judgement - and other people referring blindly to this or tha...

This is not a top-notch product, but for its price it is a fairly ok product. To really appreciate Torres Brandy, you should try Torres 20yo or the Jaime I.

What I really have to wonder is that is this Plantation rum really made with agricole method, because I at least am unaware of anyone doing rum in Barbados by use of this method?

Well I am back from Rome, Italy, and brought safely back a number of wonderful rare rums, thanks to Roberto! Sorry we did not meet in person, but I did leave the two Philippine rhums to the hotel reception for a pickup. I really hope you get them!

Re: Ron Zacapa 23 as a benchmark

Any competition that uses a commercially available mass market rum as a "benchmark" product is openly stating that they are biased, and that one style of rum is somehow superior to another. Ron Zacapa represents a very unique and quite sweet style which is remarkably different from, say, Bajan or Gu...

Re: Review: Plantation Rum Barbados Grande Reserve

Hello, I agree with the Captain, as far as I know "rhum agricole" is just a reference to the style of making the rum, and as such be the rum from Trinidad, Mauritius or where ever, it can be a "rhum agricole" regardless of what the French say or think, as they cannot own this phrase used to describe...

Hello Roberto, I am very happy you joined this forum! Thank you for the post, good information there. As I said in my email to you, if you are curious to try the Tanduay rums, I can bring some with me to Rome, perhaps we can meet and I can then give you the samples - or optionally if it is better fo...

Re: Trinidad rum, past & present

But your observation - that the French intention may have been to hogtie rather than promote makes a lot of sense, historically and otherwise. And having done so found it unacceptable to go back. Ergo harsh and WAY overpriced products promoted for their phony "terroir" and "nearness to the cane" (r...

Thank you for this piece of information, especially on the 32yo Demerara which was on my list of "consider buying". Not all rums of this age are over-the-top, but some most certainly are. Incidentally Berry Bros has some very interesting Demerara's on sale, and if they are selected by the same perso...

The original source (as also quoted on Peter's rum pages) for the history of Fernandes is their website - which no longer exists saly, since Angostura bought Fernandes (it is written with an S at the end, because the name is Portugese, rather than Spanish). I think the story was written by the compa...

Re: Recommendations for a rank neophyte in the realm of rum?

The information about Trinidadian rum's character I have received comes from a few sources, in fact. I was reading a few UWI historical studies (I have to get back to you on exact information on these), and also in talks with John Barrett, manager of Bristol Spirits ltd. as well as Mr. Rudy Moore of...

Capn, I do not believe Mr. Ayala is the original author of that quote, even if he used it in his book. I have the book and I am sorry to say, as much as I applaud his enthusiasm, Mr. Ayala has borrowed tons of material from various other sources, without accrediting the original sources in any way i...

Re: Recommendations for a rank neophyte in the realm of rum?

Current Trinidad rum scene is so dominated by Angostura Ltd. that what we see today does not at all reflect the country's rich past with rum making. On the other hand, Angostura has become a huge commercial success story that has been a blessing to the island, so ironically whilst rum traditions are...

Trinidad rum, past & present

With respects to rum experts such as Mr. Dave Broom, I think he and others may be more passionate over the flavours of Demerara or the history of Cuba, but to exclude Trinidad as a major rum history chapter is an oversight in my humble opinion. Even in the days of potstill distillation references me...

Honestly, I have no idea if they are selling or not. Perhaps one indication is that during a visit to Germany, my stockist handed over to me a whole bunch of samples - for free. So I tasted 6 different whiskies, all finished in whatever - didn't like any of them, as they all tasted like - wine.

At that price, this is a veritable bargain! In UK the standard 21yo is well over £ 100 per bottle these days..huge rise from what it was just a few years ago at about £ 60.

In Madeira rum (known as Aguar dente) distillation from local sugar cane has sadly all but died in recent years, mainly because the sugar cane growing on the island is also dying out as crops of vegetables especially replace the small cane fields located in the island's warmest microclimate valleys....

Re: Recommendations for a rank neophyte in the realm of rum?

With respects to different rum styles, personally I have used a slightly different basic style division.. In the "rum industriel's" , so called by the french because the rum is based on molasses rather than sugar cane juice, I tend to separate each one of the British West Indies styles as their own;...

Appleton Extra has not been my personal favorites, largely due to its taste profile (which I understand has now changed some in the most recent bottlings, so I must give it a try again soon). In general I find many Jamaican rums simply too strong in that roasted, burned molasses flavour - is this du...
