Re: Age statements

May you enlighten us as to the reasoning for this practice? When many distilleries sell an entire cask they will pour in a bottle from another distillery so that it is no longer a single malt. This practice insures that the cask is sold as a blend, vatted, or pure malt... rather than a single malt.

Re: Santa Teresa Gran Reserva

The 1796 is easily twice the quality of the Gran Reserva. Gran Reserva is gently oaked with a butterscotch caramel linger. The 1796 is much bigger and richer. Principal flavors are oak and dark caramel with hints of vanilla and spice. I consider it a true classic.

Re: Canada. Whiskey recommendations?

Johnny Walker Green Label Blended Scotch is very decent sipping and easy to find all over the world... but not that important or unusual. But I still rate it higher than the Swing and Glenfiddich SOLERA 15. The Forty Creek is elegant, complex, gentle and anoutstanding example of the best Canadian wh...

Re: Review: Plantation Rum Jamaica 8 Year Old

I may have a different bottling. Mine is marked Jamaica 1998. It is my current overall favourite spirit. Understand that it is not just my #1 best rum. Best overall spirit! Why such enthusiasm? There are so many suberb spirits! The answer is that when I sip this rum, it convinces me that I am tastin...

I recently purchased a couple of bottles of Highland Park, both with limited bottlings. The first is a 35 yr old under the Duncan Taylor label, distilled 1970 and bottled in 2005. This is lightly wooded with complex herbal and floral notes. Gentle and elegant overall. The second is a Single Cask bot...

Whiskey is simply distilled beer. Malt Whisky is a bit more difficult. I still have a bit of my Texas Single Malt on a back shelf.

Re: Single Malt age statements

I was not aware that the term "single cane" had been used by Porfidio. I wonder if it is used as a trademark and papers were filed. It may be used descriptively. Descriptions cannot be trademarks. But the question remains as to what term might describe rums from a single distillery instead of a blend.

Re: Woodford Reserve

I find the standard Distiller's Select to be a bit harsh in its woodyness. It has a wonderful nose, but think that many may find it overly oaked. Tastes of almond, vanilla, and savory herbs with a bright freshness in the burn. Perhaps a longer roast of the casks would balance this.
