Re: Rum Barrels
I think we would find that initially, any kind of cask would have been used - whatever was available. Also a lot of rum was not casked at all, but bottled or consumed as is - raw spirit. I do not know how many distillers use sherry, madeira, port etc casks, but I think some do to a certain extent. P...

Re: What Happened To The Rumproject
Too bad indeed. Granted, there was unnecessary amount of "ventings" which went perhaps a bit overboard, but a lot of good information also - and a lot of honest findings about the not-so-wonderful-always-world of rum.

Re: Sweet rum is good rum?
I'm a relatively new convert to rums other than the ubiquitous Bundy, which to my taste is a horrible, flowery disaster, I prefer the smoothness of Diplimatico Exclusiva Reserva, or the Pampero 1938, or a Havana Club Anejo, but that's like just my opinion...and I think this is where the OP is perha...

Re: Sweet rum is good rum?
By nature, rum is NOT sweet, as many seem to think. Just because the original raw material is "sugar" (cane) does not mean that the distilled alcohol would be sweet. I do not see any residual sugar coming through the distillation process, although some makers of "sweet stuff" claim otherwise. Oh wel...

Matusalem rum - not a pure rum
Busted. Uses flavourings in the form of macerated fruits / extracts of such. http://rumproject.com/rumforum/viewtopic.php?t=890 All I can say is that Matusalem has never ever publicly stated in their process description anything about using macerated fruits or extracts of such as a flavouring ingred...

A place to purchase older rum bottlings..
The topic is more of an idea than a reality at the moment - there simply aren't any rum auctions or such (as there are in whisky), where one could purchase older bottlings of rum. Sad. http://www.whiskyauction.com is a good example of what I am talking about, a global whisky auction house, selling o...

Unfortunately the Mount Gay Xo, as many other rums, seems to have lost some of the quality & flavour profile of its past days of glory...New bottling seems a bit sweeter, simpler than what the rum used to be. Darn this business...

Re: Caroni Trinity - single cask rum
Certainly all the reviews here have been praising this product, I also spoke to the Bar Manager of Hotel Haven (which hosts the best rum collection in the whole country, over 100 rums, mainly premium aged rums), and he agreed that this Caroni release was one of the best, perhaps THE best, expression...

Caroni Trinity - single cask rum
Finland has truly been blessed, as far as rum goes: A single cask bottling of Caroni rum, named Caroni Trinity, has been released solely for the Finnish markets. This tropic-matured, rather old cuvee of three different vintages of Caroni is being sold in the national alcohol monopoly stores (Alko), ...

Re: Review: Jameson Irish Whiskey Spectacular Double Bill
What is the point of arguing about adding water to whiskey or not? There is no absolute correct way to DRINK a drink, just a number of ways to enjoy the same drink for different purposes: Pure enjoyment, a formal tasting session, trying to identify exactly all flavour components for accurate notes, ...

Re: Toward an Authentic Rum Profile
I understand and respect the goal set here - but I think as people around the world associate same tastes with different things (due to different taste experiences, cuisine, etc), it may be a task more difficult than meets the eye. Sad thing is, the vast majority of people discussing rums have absol...

Re: Toward an Authentic Rum Profile
I can concur that John Barrett's Bristol Classic Rums are very good examples of pure rums, with no funny methods used. Tasting such rums, many single cask releases, is an eye-opener in many ways - for example, these rums are very dry in taste, when compared to almost any "mass-market" rums sweetened...

Re: Ron Zacapa 23 as a benchmark
Ron Zacapa 23 has become one of my favorite rums to date after two sips. I was able to tolerate it straight but I still prefer it cut and served on the rocks. Can someone tell me what the differences are between old style and new style Zacapa 23 (taste wise)? After tasting Zacapa 23 I found out the...

Re: Best Japanese whiskies?
I quite liked the Yamazaki 18yo, it's a very full-bodied and quite heavily sherried whisky. Recently a whisky called Yamazaki sherry cask entered the finnish whisky market, and this was lovely indeed. Nikka Yoichi 15yo Single Malt is a fine whisky also. Many of the single cask Yoichi and Miyagikyo b...

In reality, whatever tastes best to the individual is how any whisky should be enjoyed. If you're personal taste ultimately tells you to put ice in your whisky, by all means do so. The only applicable rule, tradition or suggestion regarding any beverage that you drink yourself is that it should be ...

Re: Pre-2006 El Dorado 15yo?
Ooops, I misread that in a hurry!! My mistake, no buts or ifs about it. But seriously, I do feel as if the 15yo has changed, but I put that change at a slightly earlier time, around the same time when the El Dorado chaps released their 21yo (and the label + box of the 15yo was modified slightly). An...

Pre-2006 El Dorado 15yo?

Samaroli Port Morant 1990 is very very good, Old Vatted is quite good although very woody, Port Royal 1991 is good, Silver Seal rums are exceptional and so is Banks XM10, but i do have a bit of a sweet tooth..
