Re: Vesper

skip the vesper, get a gimlet. the latter was good enough for phillip marlowe who i'll stick with if i'm going to follow the advice of a fictional character.

Re: Cañazo

I believe just fermented. I can't imagine how they would be distilling in the conditions I've seen it made. It would make the still in The Swamp from M*A*S*H look postively advanced.

Cañazo

Recently whilst hiking in the highlands of southern Peru I rediscovered the glory of one of the rum family's oft-overlooked and maligned representatives - cañazo . This is an admittedly crude version of the alcohol but one that serves a mighty and practical purpose. The drink is simply raw sugar can...

Re: Pisco

not exactly, it is the distilled part that matters here. peruvian pisco producers, as i mentioned above, target the top end and they are trying to find new markets to sell to. that means places where there is a drinking public that is not only open to this type of drink but discriminating in their t...

Re: The Louisiana Flip

many thanks, good sir. it has been my experience that drinks with names such as this tend to have pretty solid histories and, usually, there are specific reasons for their popularity at a given time. although, the impression i got from the film is they were casting the following type of aspersion on...

The Louisiana Flip

I was watching the 1932 film "Grand Hotel" this evening and there is a scene where mention is made of a drink called a "Louisiana Flip." A google search shows it's a rum drink but I was wondering if anyone knew anything about it. (I want to say it might be in that group of recipes I sent to you Coun...

Re: Pisco

are these the limons I hear about every once in a blue moon, no? quite right Out of curiosity - I've found that when I make these with regular (white sugar) Simple, they're lacking something flavor-wise. Yet with a Raw (Turbinado/Demerara sugar) Simple, they come out bloody marvelous. While that ca...

ah, sangria, you delightful temptress. many a warm afternoon have i lost in her luxurious embrace. sadly, she can be a raging beast the morning after. but such are the trials of the heart, are they not? i've had many years practice making red wine sangria and i've come to the conclusion that there a...

I had the pleasure of enjoying a bottle of the 30-year-old that my father had purchased on a whim several years prior. It was quite fine, very smoky and peaty but exceptionally smooth and profound. It's a simple game, really. First you say something ironical and then you say something pitiful. It's all the rage in New York this year.

I believe my name carries sufficent import for this refined atmosphere. Remember, as an American we lack the British taste for titles on one's nom-de-plume but, instead, rely on the worth of the man's reputation itself. In this case, I'll leave the task to you.

Proper drinks for decent whiskey

One of great tragedies of our age is the seeming demise of the cocktail. This once venerated tradition has fallen to the wayside of girly drinks and the odious trend of trendy high-end liquors that haven't been in production longer than the last time a Democrat was in the White House. Yet there are ...
