Re: Plantation Rum

I didn't get my Doorly's in a tube. Then again, I got it for US $16 at a close-out sale. For that price they can keep the tube.

Re: Plantation Rum

I find the Doorly's to be the more interesting rum due to its complexity, but the Barbancourt is a finer, more drinkable rum. If pressed, I'd get the Barbancourt, but I'd rather have both.

I concur. But I have to re-visit it, since I was very excited and it let me know. Now that I'm not so excited over it maybe it will show it's true colors.

How is the book so far?
It's OK. A little too much unrelated history - WWI and all that. The writing is OK, but the whole damn story could fit into 10 or 15 pages, so a whole book is a waste. IMHO.

Re: Today in Rum history

Funny, I'm reading the book about this catastrophe and have *just* gotten to the part where the tank fails. I didn't link the date listed in the book to the current date.... As to the urban legend of being able to smell molasses 88 years later, I can say that I have spent a lot of time in that neigh...

Re: Age statements

Apparently some rums are aged in huge vats instead of barrels. Is "aging" a good term for this? I've always heard this process as either "resting" or when blending, "marrying." I have a hard time believing that a huge vat would have much effect as an aging process, since the wood-to-rum ration woul...

Re: Review: Mount Gay Eclipse

Ahh I see what you mean now! ;) I suppose you could say its spice, I just call it tingling or burning sensation. That works. My general understanding is that this is generally called "spice" - but does anyone else call this something different?? Smokiness in Extra you say? Smoke, char, burnt, barre...

Re: Review: Mount Gay Eclipse

Spice, to me, is what gives your mouth a tingling effect, generally after swallowing. Not so much the taste of pepper, but rather the *effect* of pepper on the mouth. Well, at least that's what I call it. Try a sip of Ron Zacapa 23 and concentrate on how your mouth feels after swallowing. Then do th...

Re: Review: Mount Gay Eclipse

I'm surprised that you don't mention the spice bite with this rum. I found that I had to get past the alcohol and spice finish before I could discern much in this rum. But once I did, there really is a lot going on in this rum. There are tons of flavors in it. But they are like adding a banana and a...

Re: Age statements

I have tendencies to doubt that rum makers will start marking the ages on their bottles. And it really doesn't mean much for rum. In a place like Scotland or Kentucky the age differences can be compared and be comparable due to the tight geographic location. For rum, the geographic location is too w...

The Plantation rums change from time to time. My favorite was unavailable by the time I finished the bottle.

I have never heard of their St. Lucia, but that's one I'd grab.

To the best of my knowledge Absinthe is no longer illegal in the US. I recently read a post about a US company producing it for the first time in some number of years. Alas, I can't think of that site now. I do know that Lucid is available in the US, and that the Wormwood Society (http://www.wormwoo...

When you drink the Cask, drink it slowly. It changes between sips, if the sips are spaced.

And when it's done, place an index card over the glass you used. Let it sit for some time, like 30-60 minutes. Lift the card, stick your nose in, enjoy.

The ED15 is up there, but I'll always reach for Ron Zacapa 23-year-old, and it's always the rum that gets offered to others. If I ever get a bottle of Pyrat Cask 1623 I'm going to have to do some serious comparisons to the Zacapa. I think the Cask will beat it - but at the price of the Cask I'd stil...

It should fair well, IMHO. It's very good, and at $20 it is a bargain in the land of premium sipping rums. Nothing else under $35 comes close. IMHO.

The next night, re-read and edit that review, and revie...

You need to be careful though not to smell too much of the cardamom for example. It might get "stuck" in your nose and then you think you smell it in the rum. Rum Runner, You mention blind tasting among spirits. I was subjected to a blind tasting trying to identify 10 rums, naming the brand and type. I was most certainly blindfolded the entire time. Rum Runner, Having gone through your post again and again, I feel that I understand it enough to comment. Thinking about these, I don't understand "clarity" when it comes to rum. And I also have to admit that considering all these things makes a rating system too complex. Rating 8 or 10 different things on a scale of 1 to 10 is too complex to be helpful, in my opinion. So that's why I really don't use a rating system. Well, I kinda do in the end, but it's a 4-point system: E...

I've pretty much included the sweetness, complexity and balance in 'flavor' . Complexity: I can have a rum with one good flavor, and another rum with a lot of different flavors, good or bad. They're very different things in my opinion, and I am more likely to seek a complex rum rather than a simple...
