Re: Rum review: Ron Zacapa Centenario 23

I may be lost in the terminology here, but what on earth do they mean by the following: "Ron Zacapa Centenario 23 is produced from the sweetest crushed virgin sugar cane honey"? I as a basic simpleton do somehow understand virgin sugar cane as a term, but that reference to honey? I understand honey ...

Learning about flavours

I have occasionally discussed the topic of learning flavours with fellow rum and whisky enthusiasts. Personally I find a very good way to learn to identify things in the bouquet and also in the palate of rums and whiskies is to select a bunch of tasty items as well as spices and both smell and taste...

Re: Some Angostura information

Wonderful, thank you. Bouchard states that the 1824 is double charcoal filtered "to make it more palatable". I wonder in what way - what characteristics do they intend to remove with charcoal? Any idea J? I can only guess, but I'd say most likely longterm storage in the charred casks imparted some ...

Re: Some Angostura information

Thanks! Please feel free to publish it as you like, its been ages since I worked on this material sadly. What can I say, work and family got me busy, didn't have time for rum so much any more after getting the information. I am very happy that Angostura's rums have become a huge success worldwide, b...

Some Angostura information

The following information may be slightly outdated, but in 2001 I was in closer contact with people at Angostura Ltd. and asked them a series of questions. This was following my visits to their site at the outskirts of Laventille, Trinidad on earlier times. My contact person was Ms. Giselle Laronde-...

Re: Chill (and other) filtration in rum manufacturing

As I understand, charcoal filtering is quite common if not an industry standard parctice in the making of mass-market rums. Chill-filtration is probably also similarly common practice. Adding caramel-colouring (has of course nothing to do with filtration methods, but is shunned away from by whisky a...

Re: Review: Johnnie Walker Green Label Blended Malt

Just one comment about consistency of flavours: I would wager good money for the fact that if you got a Green Label bottle bottled, lets say, 10 years ago, you would find it rather different from today's green label. The flavours do change over a period of time, whether they want them to or not. So ...

Chill (and other) filtration in rum manufacturing

Many whisky aficionados of today swear by products which have received very little filtration and are as close to "straight from the barrel" as possible. The "least liked" filtration method of today must be chill filtration - a method in which the alcoholic substance is cooled down in temperature cl...

Re: Rum review: St. Nicholas Abbey Barbados Rum 10 Years Old

Great review, nice to see additional information regarding this rum. I hope it will gain success in UK, and thus also find its way to the rest of Europe as well. What makes it interesting is the use of the agricole-method (as stated by the makers themselves), and it coming from Barbados. The Trinida...

Re: Caroni rum auction fails

I had a conversation about this with Robert Wong on my last trip to Trinidad. Caroni have been trying to sell their rum for a long time, both in bottles and in bulk. We even thought about it for a short while. I see several bottling companies advertise they sell rum from the Caroni stills. I hopefu...

Re: Coruba 25 year old Jamaican Rum

Have you got around to trying this rum as yet? I'm afraid that I know very few Jamaican rums apart from the Appleton selections. Occasionally here in Europe we see independent bottlings of famous Jamaican estates / stills, such as Monymusk distillery or Long Pond (both still operating). It seems Jam...

English Harbour Extra Old disappearing?

One of my favorite rums, English Harbour Extra Old, seems to be harder and harder to find: I recently managed to scoop up a bottle of this from Germany, but I do not see it being sold much these days. I do see a 5-year old, and a 10-year old, plus a vintage 1981 (if memory serves me correctly), but ...

I think personal preference as per sampled whisk(e)y may override general rules, but in general, I do agree - adding ice to a (malt) whisky is not a fabulous idea. One notable exception which I feel should be mentioned is Bourbon - many of these whiskies were designed to be drank with one or two ice...

I think it will flow quite naturally once you get started, but I would say maybe 15-20 minutes per whisky, if there is some discussion. Really don't know which hat you pulled that rabbit out of. BTI "heavily promotes" no spirits, they merely test them using random blind methods and report the scores. Z-23 is not their highest rated rum, in fact it is tied with Mount Gay Extra Old and Inner Circle General Manager Reserve for third. ...

Re: Ron Zacapa 23 as a benchmark

Bottling code is usually a string of letters and numbers found somewhere on the bottle itself. In typical cases, it would look something like this:

L5 233 ML4

In which the 5 refers to year of bottling (2005), 233 refers to the day of the year when bottling was done.
