Re: Organising a whisky tasting

I've organized several whisky tastings for different types of audiences and I am happy to give you some tips. A good theme makes the tasting more interesting than a tasting which is based on whatever people may or may not bring with them. Some good themes include: - Islay Malts - Whiskies of the Wor...

Re: Age statements

Despite of the differences in conditions in ageing rum at different countries and places, I do feel it would bring a degree of intergrity to the whole rum industry if producers everywhere adopted a uniformal approach to age statements - and my suggestion would then be that the age of the youngest di...

Re: Berry Bros & Rudd, Port Morant kept in Laphroaig casks 2yrs

I find burnt sugar to be harsher in flavour with some smokiness in it compared to regular sugar and roasted sugar is somewhere in between. Caramel on the other hand is this soft and slightly creamy and sweet flavour. Thats at least how I see it. White pepper like its color suggest is not as strong ...

"J", could you please distinguish "burnt sugar" from "roasted sugar" from "caramel"? And how about "black pepper" from "white pepper" and "clove"? I will do my best, in terms as I mean them...At times I apologize if my terminology in tasting notes is not 100% constant, but I do believe this is huma...

Berry Bros & Rudd, Port Morant kept in Laphroaig casks 2yrs

Berry Brothers and Rudd, the distinguished wine merchants in UK, have an impressive pedigree and history: "Britain's oldest wine and spirit merchant, having traded from the same shop for over 300 years. The business was officially established in 1698 by the Widow Bourne at 3 St James's Street in Lon...

Rivière du Mat Opus 5 - Rhum Agricole, Reunion

I had the opportunity to taste this interestingly different rhum at Bar Grotesk in central Helsinki, Finland. Despite of the name, there's nothing grotesque about this bar - it is, in fact, a fine establishment with a fabulous selection of exclusive rums and whiskies. But without further ado, lets g...

Re: Wild Turkey Rye

Can't say that I have, but it certainly looks distinguished and the price is reasonable, what with strong euro against weak dollar, that is. Wild Turkey does make fine products, I just happened to like a slightly sweeter Bourbon than what Rare Breed is. I am not saying it was bad, just dry at the fi...

Re: Wild Turkey Rye

I cannot shed any additional light as far as the 12-year old goes, but I have tried the Wild Turkey Rare Breed bourbon. This much acclaimed, cask strength bourbon was not to my liking, mainly due to the super-dry finish which at least my bottle had. Of course this was years ago, and current batches ...

Some of the blue label Pusser's rum is bottled at 54%, known as the "ignition strength" - read below: "The rum used to arrive in England at 140 degrees overproof after which it was reduced to 95.5 degrees underproof by having water added to it. The 20yo and Jaime primero are both on the list of order-items, i.e. you can order them, takes about two weeks and they arrive to your local - at no extra cost (and order can be placed for one bottle only, so you do not have to buy a case). Jaime I is not so inexpensive, it sells for about 60 euros ...

Indeed, well written gentlemen. Terroir, as a concept, is of course not only a French belief, however If I may just humbly point out that terroir is again a reference to specific conditions of soil etc - at a certain geographical location. What I do find interesting is that it was not until q...

Rum & Wood Finishes / experiments

Rum, as most of us would probably agree, is a fine alcoholic beverage. It is usually aged these days in ex-bourbon barrels. At least in the english-speaking Caribbean, use of such barrels has be a de facto standard. Another types of casks used more traditionally for rum maturation are the ex-cognac ...

Re: Review: Plantation Rum Barbados Grande Reserve

One thing I thought of adding, as I looked at 10 cane rum - a rhum agricole from Trinidad, albeit the manufacturers, being french, seemingly avoid naming calling it so. Still, they go to great lengths in proudly displaying that this rum is made precisely in accordance to the agricole method, somethi...

[ You cannot AOC a method - only a place of origin. Well the statement are simple to understand, but unfortunately ill founded, and therefore to be addressed, and not digested. Re: Review: Plantation Rum Barbados Grande Reserve

As far as I know, Agricole is not a place - it is a reference to a method, as I stated. AOC (or Place of origin) can of course make other rules as to how the people living in that place are allowed to make certain product (be it wine, cheese, whisky), but still the actual AOC refers just to a PLACE ...

Not only 'controlled' in its method of production, Rhum Agricole is 'controlled' in its region of production-- these are two of the principle hinges upon which all AOC designations are granted. So it is not only the material, the methodology, the mechanics, the details of handling, but also the loc...

I added Pampero Anniversario to the review, to highlight the differences. Again, for 10 euros a bottle, the clearly younger mass-market bottling of Especial is a great buy, but in quality and finesse it is no match to Pampero anniversario.

I would imagine that far more than 78 barrels are blended into most commercially available rums - and also it is noteworthy that in a great % of the cases the rums blended together do not even come from one single distillery. My guess is that there was a good batch of rum, and Velieri wanted to make...

A "reference-sip" from the Caroni Special Old Cask confirmed that this Velieri bottling is truly much, much thicker and heavier, but still a medium-bodied rum. The Special Old Cask nose sweeter is in comparison, and despite of similarities, more infused with vanilla-sugar, almost no oiliness. The fl...

Caroni 1983 heavy style high proof rum, bottled at 52% - a blend of 78 barrels, producing a total of 20.986 bottles. From the title of this chain, I am not certain if talking of cocktails made of malt whisky also applies, but the Smoky martini is an absolute favorite of mine. - 4cl of Dry Gin (for a change, try Plymouth gin instead of London dry style) - 1 cl or .5 cl of Islay whisky, Laphroaig is often suggested ...
