When I review, I generally consider: Aroma - I think this is quite important. The aroma hits first, and can be inviting, or not. Sweetness - Noted, but not considered much in the overall view. Flavor Complexity - The amount and strength of the different tastes (if any, I hate boring rums) Balance - ...

Not a chance for me to post mine. I am almost finished packing them away, making space so that I can turn a basement room into a bar. Hopefully by spring I'll have some nice shelves on the walls displaying them all. 132 and still growing...

It is, in a way, since its based on the Bombo - just with modern ingredients. "If I was going to raise a glass to America, it would contain grog or a rum flip or the mixture of rum, water, molasses and nutmeg that buccaneers used to call a bombo." The bombo doesn't sound too exciting. Dildo's Bumbo ...

From the sounds of you two I'll have to grab 2 bottles. One for Angelsword and one for me!

I'll make a note to go hit that store soon. They also have the Ron Botran 18-year-old Solera that was at Rum Fest... And the New Orleans rums, which have been on my list for quite some time.

You can tempt me with a trade... :-)

I wish I had known you were looking for it. A store in Rhode Island has it, about an hour from King Richard's.

I agree completely. And it makes a hell of a Cuba Libre if you don't like it straight, so you won't be wasting it.

Coruba is a dark rum from Jamaica, from J Wray and Nephew, the makers of Appleton Estate rums. It is generally regarded as a mixing rum, not a sipping rum. My understanding is that is it probably the best dark mixing rum, but this has little to do with its suitability for sipping. I would most certa...

I missed a chance at tasting it a couple weeks ago. I simply forgot, and so did the gentleman who offered it. Granted, we did sample at least 15 rums that night. But I've heard many good things about it, and it's been on my list for some time. Alas, this government has an issue with Cuban products s...

Brandy Recommendations?

I love most things about cognac - except its price. I have no qualms about drinking armagnac just because it's not cognac. Simply put, I appreciate a good brandy. I would say that smoothness is my primary concern closely followed by complexity. And I prefer sweet to dry. An ultra smooth but boring b...

Count Silvio wrote:The Havana Club Añejo Blanco should be good for mojitos.
I think it makes the quintessential mojito - though I have yet to try any other Cuban whites due to their scarcity in the US.... An HC mojito certainly kicks butt on against almost all of the whites available in the US.

I have been growing fond of them, but they are all over the map. What do you expect with over 5,000 distillers produci...

AngelSword wrote:One of my favorite light rums is Green Island, and should be available in the EU. We can't get it in the US. I picked up a taste for it while adventuring in Africa.
My understanding is that the Starr Africa rum is the Green Island rum re-branded for the US market.

Thank you sir.

And I know the feeling about emptying wallets. My last rum purchases came to almost $600 for 18 rums... I'm on a non-spending spree that certainly does not include cognac for a while.

Solved! Cognac? Calvados? Brandy?

My second love of spirits is Cognac, a very refined vice that wouldn't be a vice at all if it were cheaper. And Calvados interests me due to a love of apples. And heck, why not throw all Brandies in there? I hereby put forth the notion that a "Brandies" area would be quite tolerable. Quite. And then...

I know most of AngelSword's list and I agree. I also know AngelSword, so I'd try the others in a heartbeat. He also has more rums - I think I'm at 135 or 140 right now. I'd also add: Appleton Extra Pyrat XO (sweet, with strong orange/apricot tones, but excellent value) Barbancourt 5-Star (8-year) Di...

Re: A Post Scriptum

Common sense dictates that if you put a 10 euro whisky, a 10 euro rum and a 10 euro brandy on the table none of them will taste good. Add just two tenners to the respective prices and the drinks start to get palatable. Add a similar price increase and the amber nectar will fly off the bottle. The f...

Well, let's just say that the rest of me is always pleased when something meets the palate's approval, so ...

I don't drink wine, but rum. A cork is definitely preferred, and I don't mind these new "plastic" corks with the black plastic top that I've been seeing lately. Though they're not real corks, and don't have the resulting refinement, they do a superior job at sealing at the cost of an inferior job of...
