Recent discussion on another forum about indian rums that have the mark XXX on the bottles made me think about this marking and where it actually comes from. Some digging revealed a couple of sources that suggest the mark XXX was used during prohibition in moonshine bottles to show the proof of the liquor or how many times the liquor has been ran through the still.

What is your take on this marking and does anyone have any more information or facts about this type of marking?
