My Canadian heritage and paternal Scottish ancestry have marked me with a taste for Scotch and Canadian whiskies, while my formative years spent in the tropics have left a caramel sweet taste for rum on my palate. We shan't delve into my maternal German and Russian lineage until such time as a discussion of Schnapps or Vodka becomes appropriate.

As a scholar of literature may I suggest that I find the works of Joseph Conrad wonderfully complimentary to an evening spent alone in the company of rum, whisky and a cigar.

Unless I am mistaken, didn't the Bundaberg go down in a heap of flames in New Jersey, U.S.A. in the '30's?

I enjoy a good scotch and also the occasional snifter of cognac.

I collect swords and partake in fox hunts. In the absence of a fox then shooting the local indigenous population can be quite satisfying.

Although my consumption of fine spirts has lagged in recent years by the demands of my temperament my standards for such pleasures has been reduced not a whit.

But my palate, I'm happy to say, is quite refined when it comes to rums. Well, let's just say that the rest of me is always pleased when something meets the palate's approval, so the rest of me figures that my palate is quite refined indeed.

Good evening lads. Just thought I would pop in and report that I am hale and hearty whilst bivouacked with the boys down here at the British Antartic Survey. The daily ration of grog has gone far to keep spirits high here on this god forsaken place. I still cannot understand why we did not let the bloody Argentinians just have the rocks. Still, it was good to thrash them silly. Of course I hope to post some of my memories of days gone bye swilling the kill devil on my various campaigns. God willing.
