Pub staff unwittingly drank Whitehaven rum possibly worth thousands.

A vintage stoneware flagon of Jefferson’s Whitehaven rum which was unwittingly downed by workers at a Sheffield pub might have been worth thousands of pounds.

The pub, The Bowery, belongs to Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders and the flagon, containing a gallon of the dark spirit, had been picked up at auction by the workers for £70. They were keen to sample its contents, even though it was thought to be over 200 years old.

The wax seal was removed from the stone bottle, and some of the rum spilled on the bar before it was tried and found to be “very tasty’’ It also made a “dark and stormy’’ cocktail.

According to the label, the bottle had been originally sold by T & W Siddle, who had the Crown Hotel at Penrith, said Phil Haslehurst, manager of the Rum Story at Whitehaven.

Phil had received a phone call from someone called James at The Bowery asking about the rare rum.

Phil said: “I told them that when Jeffersons sold up for the premises to be turned into a visitor attraction, cases of vintage rum were being sold and fetching tens of thousands of pounds. One case went for £30,000. I think they were a bit shocked!’’

Phil has seen images of the flagon held in a wicker basket and saw it had ‘R & H Jefferson, Whitehaven’ inscribed into the stoneware.

Bar owner Matt Helder found out about it all the following day. It seems the bar staff were ‘mortified’ when they realised what they had done and have now got some of the country’s leading rum experts arriving to check it out.
