Duvel. The plain white label with red font belies the complexity of the beer that is held inside the brown glass vessel.This is truly one of the finest examples of brewing I have ever laid eyes and tastebuds upon.
This beer is far from cheap, weighing in at about the $17 a 750mL bottle. It also packs quite a punch, at around the 8.5% alcohol mark.
This is a Belgian trappiste ale. It pours with a losely packed, faintly honey coloured foamy head. They beer itself has the colour that old floorboards go, that pale teak, shellac, honey colour.
The beers aromas give hints as to it's pallete. Having toffee, honey and nut in the front, with hints of a cocoa like bitterness in the finish.
This beer is one that can be enjoyed with or without food. Food recommendations would be something substantial, not pastas, fish or chicken. It'd be much more complimentary to a steak or the like.
It really is worth the cost of the beer, from the moment you pop the champagne like cork in the bottle, (This is only in the 750mL bottles, not the 330mL ones) to the last drop, it is worth every cent. Many reviewers, including this one consider this a beer to measure all others by. Brewing excellence.
