Hi all

I'm just discovered the world of Rum.
I never really liked Whiskey, but I friend offered me a glass of 12y old Eldorado and I was sold.

Now which Rum would you suggest me to try next?
I tried Bacradi's 8y old version and I find it tasty.
Not close to Eldorado, but nice.

Thank you!

Ricky

Hi Ricky, welcome to Refined Vices!

Your friend picked a very nice rum to introduce you to the world of rum! I also like the 15 year old El Dorado very much, which is one of the heavier style rums out there.

I could recommend English Harbour 5 year old, Plantation Rum Barbados 5 year old. Ron Pampero Aniversario is a nice classic rum that comes in a leather pouch and I might even recommend Pussers 15 year old navy rum.

Thank you for the reply

I assume the 5y old rum is a bit lighter in the taste than the older once?

Ive been suggested to try "Ron Matusalem Gran Reserva - 15 years"!?
Any thoughts on that one?

I wouldn't say the 5 year old English harbour is lighter in flavour than the 10 year old, in fact I prefer it over the 10 year old. I find it's more vibrant.

Matusalem 15 is a solera aged rum so it is not actually 15 years old but contains some 15 year old rum in it. Having said that it is one of my favorite rums. Read the review here: http://www.refinedvices.com/ron-matusal ... -15-solera

Ricky, your question is one most new rum drinkers face. The biggest mistake you can make is to simply start asking people what rum should I try next, and the next few years of your life will then be driven by trying a bunch of unrelated rums, many of which are really quite inferior, and after all is said and done, you will still have no better understanding or real appreciation of the spirit.

Long ago, I wrote the beginning to an "e-book" on rum, which is intended to give new drinkers an economical and effective way to approach rum and to understand it's four or five basic styles. The point is to know that these basic styles exist, and then to identify and taste a good representative rum from each category. In this way you will come to know the basics and have a ready standard of comparison by which to try other rums. You'll no doubt come to prefer one or more of the styles, and will know what a good rum in that category is supposed to taste like.

Here's a link to Chapter Five - A Basic Starter Collection: Chapter Five. The other chapters cover how to go about tasting rums, choosing a good glass, and so on.

Good luck.

Hello there

I'll get your point. Asking in this forum was just to get some qualified suggestions about which I should taste.
I done some reading already about the styles and making of the rum to be able to find me way through the different kind of rum. But as a rookie on the fields I appriciate your link and it surely will be a great help to get started.

Good day!

You have a favorite rum?

No. But more to the point: what are the rums you selected to represent each style, and to understand them? How have you approached learning to appreciate rum? What kind of glass do you use, and how do you approach a tasting? Do you compare a new rum against your reference rums in each style?

Sorry guys for not visiting for awhile. I was on the wagon most of the summer. I wanted to take a break from the spirits before the spirits broke me!

Capn Jimbo. Is your eBook available for dloading? I would definitely like to give it a read.

Ricky. Welcome to the forum! Until you gain this knowledge the Capn is talking about I would also agree with Count Silvio and give Matrusalem a taste. It's my latest tasting and I like it very much. Count. I promise I will give a full review for the Matrusalem. Unfortunately, I have the last bottle available in Pennsylvania (or at least my immediate area). They stopped carrying it in PA. The only good thing about this news I was able to purchase it for $18!! SA WHEAT!! So I promise, I will save enough to sip it neat so I can give an honest review. Initially, I say it tastes like a cross between Zacapa 23 and Appleton XO.

Hi, Ricky
I'm also not a big specialist in rums, but I would like to advice you one, that I'm sure is an exciting alternative to cognac and whisky for the less conventional. Try Cruzan Single Barrel Rum, I think you'll like it :D

OK, against my better judgment I'll recommend the official British Navy Rum, Pusser's Blue Label. And why this one? I believe that a real appreciation of rums comes from history and tradition - learning the styles of rums, which came first, and so on. Thus there's a case for starting with a good Bajan style, then on to the aromatic Jamaican style. Next would be the medium bodied Demeraran style, then a nice cane juice style. Your exploration is complete when you taste a smooth and peppery Cuban style rum (the most recent).

All rums fall into these styles. But I recommended the Pussers - again why? It's because this formula is the oldest and without question the most authentic style we know of. It contains rums from 5 former British colonies, and was served to British sailors for a couple hundred years. The current formula is from about 1800. It is a top quality, pure and unadulterated rum and to us, the perfect starting point for understanding.

Seriously, the only reason our collection grew to 200 was because we approached rums based without much knowledge or sophistication. But having made that mistake, we decided to help other avoid our errors, and provided a path for understanding.

Good luck! May you buy only great rums!
