Bowmore 25 years old (distilled 1983) Douglas Laing & Co. Platinum Old & Rare 47,8 %, total number of bottles 203.

Colour: Chardonnay, light hay colour. ex-Bourbon cask no doubt.

Nose: Very floral and sweet, violets and lavender. Typical Bowmore tar, smoke and peat are coming through slowly from the background in a soft way.

Palate: 80's Bowmore Lavender rises immediately present right after taking a sip but it is beautiful and integrated, with some dried apricot flavour following. I am not a big fan of these lavender notes but in this whisky they are suitably pleasant and soft, not combined with heavier oily notes. Maltiness brings the underlying tar and smoke floating into the palate. Again fuit, dried apricots? A splash of water brings in stronger fruity presence but also emphasizes the lavender.

Finish: Dry, soft smoke and slightly vegetal, no real oak there, so quite youthful for its age.

Comments:
A very good example of a well-aged 80's Bowmore where lavender notes play a big part but in a good way. Less caramelized and toffee-drowned than most of the standard original bottling releases of today, and very youthful for its age. This is a well-balanced Bowmore worth checking out.
