I'd not heard of the 21 year Havana Reserve before now. I'll have to track that one down.

Glenfiddich have a very fine variety of 'special reserves', and from over £17,000 a bottle for the 64year old, to a more reasonable £250 for a 21 year old reserve they provide a great deal of variety. They even have a great range at under the £100 mark for those willing to explore the varieties available.

Although the 21 year old havana reserve isn't available from this link, a fine variety of aged malts from Glenfiddich is with prices to suit all pockets.

I should also mention that due to expensive litigation the above link is an affiliate link which would earn me a few pennies if you subsequently purchased. For those who have no interest in assisting my legal defence I feel I should also provide a non-affiliate link. I hope this honesty regarding links is considered gentlemanly and is permitted

edited to correct myself! they do have a 21year old havana reserve available for £150!

£150! It's an exceptional whisky for anyone who also appreciates fine rum but that's a lot of money.

Could I be persuaded to pay £150 for it? Don't know - good thing we don't have to :)

If I had to pick right now ( the answer to this question for me, changes daily ), I'd probably go with either Booker's or Old Potrero, heck, I might even toss in Old Weller 107.

The Glenfiddich Havana Reserve is now £63.99! They have apparently had to change the name to Caribbean Rum Finish.

It could be though to me it quite clearly states it is infact Scotch. This would seem like a must get Scotch to me. Speaking of Glenfiddich, I am a little confused when it comes to their 18 year old bottling. Are Glenfiddich 18 YO and Glenfiddich 18 YO Ancient Reserve the same thing?

As a side note I would like to point out that you can get a personalised label for the 18 YO if you buy it from their website which I think is pretty cool. The price is only 35 krakens but the delivery is what makes it very expensive.

There's so many of them...have to categorize:

Irish: Redbreast 15yo 46% - like much-liked Redbreast 12yo, but supercharged.

American: Blanton's gold edition or A.W. Hirsch 16yo Bourbon. Great bourbons, not as dry as some of the Rare Turkey's for example.

Blended Scotch: Royal & Ancient 28yo - a superb blend of finesse, showing its origins (Macallan & Glenlivet malts used especially), silky smooth & beats the #@¤&!! out of most far more expensive blended whiskies. Still, best-ever blended tasted was Inver House 35yo blend.

SINGLE MALTS OF SCOTLAND:

Lowlands: Rosebank's, especially younger ones, and preferably from a bourbon barrel. Lovely!

Islay: Many great whiskies, but I am partial to Arbeg's, different versions. Port Ellen's are also very, very nice typically.

Islands: Highland Park 25yo. Lovely sherried beauty, amazingly complex and yet balanced.

Campbeltown: Springbank 21yo, old release. Without a doubt a dram that impressed me vastly when it was available. Got a few bottles stashed away..

Speyside: Hmm, many choices here..Glenfarclas, older sherried versions that are not too dry, but rather portray rich and fruity characteristics.

Highlands: Brora, but pre-1977 versions (highly peated).

That will have to do..

They changed the name (and quite possibly the rum cask source) due to the fact that USA did not allow this bottle to be sold - embargo against Havana is still very much in effect..

After reviewing over 120 rums at The Rum Project, Sue Sea and I came to the unfortunate conclusion that truly and unadulterated rums are few and far between. Still, the ones that are pure are magnificent, and among these we'd have to include Doorly's XO, MGXO, Seales Ten Year, Barbancourt, Pussers Blue Label, Sea Wynde, Appletons, Smith & Cross, and more. But after 120 rums, you simply run out of rums to experience and review.

Ergo single malts and wines.

I'm slowly developing a huge appreciation for the truly noble spirit of these fine whiskys. I have to agree with the poster who referred to dear departed Michael Jackson's work, and deferring to genius I acquired Laphroig 10 Year, Glenfiddich 15 Year, Balvenie DoubleWod, Highland 12, Macallan 10, Glenlivet 12 and a number of good Irish whiskies.

Single malts define what purity and nobility is all about and I'm really loving them. The one that really turned the corner for me was the Glenfiddich 15 Year, a perfect transition from the world of rogue rum. The Laphroig made my socks roll up and down, but the Highland Park 12 Year - as so well put by Jackson - is the one single malt that fully expresses the genre.

It may be hard to go back to the sugared, altered rums after this...

Highland Park 12 is a magnificent whisky that showcases the fantastic Orkney peat and how it can transform a whisky. It is my standard peated whisky which I serve friends who are new to the peat experience. Your othe choices are solid as well including the Glenfiddich 15 which has spent time in a solera style Oregon Pine pipe.

If you wish to give Canadian Whisky a try, The Gibson's 18 I believe will be available in the US and it is great. Wiser's Small Batch is a great bargain as well.

But do not turn your nose at the Scottish Blends. Johnnie Walker Black label is a great whisky at a fair price. Old Parr Superior is yet another great Diageo Blends. IMO those two are every bit as good as any Single Malt. (With maybe the exception of that Highland Park 12)

Enjoy the Whisky Capn.

Time has passed and I'd make the following additions:

Cragganmore 12 Year: floral and light, even Sue Sue (who hates whisky) loves this one.
Bowmore 12 Year: a modest Islay peat with fruity overtones, nice, much improved over the Legend.

Speaking of blends, I've discovered some terrific options:

The Compass Box blends are very well respected and uniformly score very highly (mostly in the low 90's). They include the Oak Cross, a blend of Highland single malts finished in a combination of American and French Oak (Amercan oak barrels are relidded with French). Compass Box is a small company and considers themselves "artisan whiskymakers" who seek out the best single malts to marry for unique profiles. It's run by John Fisher who has earned broad respect for his limted but special releases.

Another bunch of guys - Jon, Mark and Robbo have engaged in a similar, if not somewhat larger endeavor and have created some really nice blends which include "The Smooth Sweet One" and "The Rich Spicy One". Don't be put off by the titles, the blends are very tasty and well conceived. The bottle hangers even publish a profile wheel for each, and happily they sell at quite reasonable prices (under $30).

BTW, we've now added a whisky section at The Rum Project...
