September 13, 2012; Kingston Jamaica. J. Wray & Nephew Limited’s Master Blender, Joy Spence OD, has been awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Science from Loughborough University in England.

Joy, who has the distinction of being the first female master blender in the spirits industry, was awarded the honorary degree in recognition of her contribution to the distilled spirits industry and the advancement of women in the field.

Angostura has released for auction one of the most exclusive blends of rum in the world. With only twenty 500ml bottles available worldwide, Legacy by Angostura is expected to go for AUD$25,000 within the next few days at the online auction by Langton's in Australia.

Legacy by Angostura is the result of six years of hard work, passion and 50 years of combined experience between the Master Blenders. The blend consists of 7 of the distillerys most precious rums with the youngest of the rums in the blend being 17 years old.

World Class Cocktail Competition Winter Round

Sunday May 20th saw a tough competition at the Blue Diamond bar in Melbourne as nine bartenders competed in the Winter Semi Finals of Diageo's World Class Cocktail Competition, creating some truly amazing concoctions to shake off the cold.

Categories in the competition included Gentleman's Cocktail, Hot Cocktail and Dessert Serve, featuring Don Julio Reposado Tequila, Johnnie Walker Gold Label and Ron Zacapa 23 rum. Guests were invited to taste all nine cocktails and give their vote as part of the competition in each category to the bartender they thought did best.

Monday last week at the SMC, Sean Baxter from Behind Bars walked us through a very tasty line-up of some beautiful Single Malt whiskies produced in different regions of Scotland to give us an idea of the different styles. In the line up we had a total of 6 whiskies - Glenkinchie 10 and 12 year old from the Lowlands, Talisker Distillers Edition and Talisker 18 Year Old from the Islands and Lagavulin 12 and 16 Year Old from the Islay.
